"Maintaining Reliability of Existing Steam Turbine Fleet"

This presentation will focus on damage mechanisms affecting reliability of large steam turbines in power generating plants. Technology to detect or assess damage will be discussed. Measures being taken by turbine manufacturers to eliminate or reduce reliability issues in the design process will also be covered. The presentation will also briefly cover EPRI initiatives to assist the industry in improving turbine maintenance outage planning and execution.

Stephen Hesler is a Program Manager in the Fossil Operations and Maintenance program area of the Generation Sector at EPRI. His current research activities focus on collaborative research to improve plant reliability, maintenance, and operational effectiveness for the existing fleet of fossil generating plants. In this role, he is overseeing development of a more integrated approach to the use of plant condition monitoring, machinery diagnostics, work management, and risk-informed decision tools.
